ON THE HILLS JUST OUTSIDE BETHLEHEM SHEPHERDS ARE WATCHING THEIR SHEEP.
SHEPHERD 1 I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘S’.
SHEPHERD 2 Sheep.
SHEPHERD 1 No.
SHEPHERD 3 Shepherd?
SHEPHERD 1 No.
SHEPHERD 4 I know! Sandal.
SHEPHERD 1 Do you want me to tell you?
SHEPHERD 3 Sky!
SHEPHERD 2 Is it soil?
SHEPHERD 5 You can’t see soil it’s covered with grass.
SHEPHERD 3 What’s another word for grass?
SHEPHERD 1 It’s not grass!
SHEPHERD 2 Sandal!
SHEPHERD 1 You already said that!
SHEPHERD 2 I didn’t.
SHEPHERD 4 It was me.
SHEPHERD 1 Look up.
SHEPHERD 2 That’s a clue. You’re not allowed to give clues.
SHEPHERD 3 You’ve spoilt it now!
SHEPHERD 1 Star! How could you miss that great big star?
ALL LOOK ABOVE THEM AND SAY IN WONDER ‘OH YEAH’
AN ANGEL APPEARS WITH A HOST OF OTHER ANGELS
SHEPHERD 1 (Hesitant, frightened) I spy with my little eye something beginning with A.
SHEPHERD 2 Angel.
SHEPHERD 4 There’s more than one of them.
ANGEL Fear not. I bring you tidings of great joy. A special baby will be born this night in Bethlehem. Follow the star and you will find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger.
SHEPHERD 1 Please Sir, Mister Angel. We’ll get in trouble if we leave the sheep.
ANGEL We will watch over them.
SHEPHERD 3 Do they know anything about sheep?
SHEPHERD 3 What?
SHEPHERD 1 They’re Angels!
SHEPHERD 3 Doesn’t mean they know anything about sheep.
SHEPHERD 1 Angels know everything about everything.
SHEPHERD 3 Just watch that little one, he’s a Devil he is.
ANGEL No problem.
SHEPHERD 3 If you take your eyes off him even for a second.
ANGEL Got it.
SHEPHERD 3 And he’s quick.
ANGEL Not too quick for me.
THE SHEPHERDS SING
We’re just ordinary men watching sheep in the night
And the Lord just sent his Angel
And he gave us such a fright
And he told us of a baby in the stable down the glen
So we’re off to Bethlehem
Fancy that, ordinary men
